Routine???

Routine: a course of normative, standardized actions or procedures that are followed regularly, often repetitiously. (wikipedia).   Today I have decided that I’m happy with my so called ‘routine’ with Eden and I’m giving up my quest for a scheduled day! No day should be too similiar I have decided as surprise is the spice of life. Since the beginning of my routine ‘marathon’ she has commenced one large daytime sleep and two to three small sleeps, this along with the 3-4 hourly feeding I feel is perfect.

If only now I could organise the dark hours into some normality then perhaps I wouldn’t be aging quite so fast. A month ago my wee princess was sleeping through the night, giving me a snapshot of what a normal nights sleep feels like, how it felt to be human again. Currently she has retreated to waking two to three times a night!!! Growth spurt? perhaps, who knows, all I know is that when I hear her cry I’m up and the countdown to return to bed begins. I have to admit that the gummy smiles and snuggles in the middle of the night are enjoyable yet Im sure I could be persuaded to enjoy them more in the daylight. From the minute I pick up my wee monkey till the moment I snuggle her back down I can  feel the call of my pillow with my imprinted silloheutte and the feel of its embrace when I rest into it…………………..

From being someone with no routine with shift work I assumed this lack of sleep would be something I would be good at, that I would function at my usual level without the zombie stares, incoherent language and forgetfulness. I like just about every mum I know feel the heaviness of it just as much.  I do, however, have a new appreciation of my body and how every day it continues to get up and smile despite only resting for no more than 3 hours in a row!! I also have a new appreciation for those mothers with children who don’t sleep through until the age of 4 but hope and pray that I will appreciate that from afar and not join their club.

As if on cue she has awoken, ready for another round in a new week. Until next blog xx
